Audemars Piguet is one of the world’s oldest watchmakers. Founded in 1875, the
company is still owned and operated by the founding families. Jules Audemars
and Edward-August Piguet began the company in Vallee de Joux, combining their
skills to create watches for the famous watch making houses in Geneva. Many
pocket watches manufactured by Audemars Piguet are only distinguishable by their
serial numbers as they carry the brand names of jewelers such as Tiffany and
Gubelin.

Both
founders died in the two years leading up to 1920 but the Audemars Piguet
company continued to flourish. Although suffering a downturn during both World
Wars the introduction of ladies wristwatches and ultra thin models, meant
business continued relatively unscathed. Amongst world firsts in watch making,
Audemars Piguet’s moment of glory was in 1972 when they launched the world’s
first sports watch, the Royal Oak. The Royal Oak revolutionized the aesthetics
of watches with an octagonal shape and steel edges.
Other historical highlights from Audemars Piguet include the
first wristwatch with tourbillon and mechanical winding, the smallest
self-winding watch with perpetual calendar, the Dual Time and the Ladies Minute
Repeater Chiming watch. Audemars
Piguet specializes in the creation of complex watches and despite their
resounding success each watch is still handmade. They are considered one of the
big 3 master watchmakers alongside Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantine.
