The history of the Gruen Watch Company is as interesting as the fine line of Gruen watches. Dietrich Gruen, a German immigrant who lived in Delaware, Ohio, started the Columbus Watch Company, in Columbus, Ohio. He finished and cased watch movements from Switzerland, but in 1894, along with his son, Fred, the Gruen watch company began under the name of “D. Gruen and Son”. They soon became famous for the best pocket watches and wristwatches. In 1911, Fred Gruen opened a factory in Cincinnati, Ohio, called “Time Hill”. It went on to become one of the largest watch companies in the country and continued until the late 1970’s. The Gruen name is now owned by M.Z. Berger and continues to produce fine watches and has kept its impeccable reputation for fine craftsmanship, excellent styling and precision time.
According to documented information from a 1929 Gruen Catalog – “To produce the watch of his dreams: he must have two things. He must have a machiner of the most advanced type – and he must have the very best craftsmen in the world – craftsmen in whom the old guild spirit of fine watchmaking still lived.”
