Reuge WatchesThe legacy of Ruege watches and timepieces began in the 14th century in Flanders, when an ingenious bell ringer invented a cylinder with pins which operates cams, before hitting the bells---this was the technology which the first Reuge timepeices was based upon. The Reuge watch company got its roots from Charles Reuge, a watchmaker from the Val-de-Travers, when he first moved to Sainte-Croix and begins making pocket watches with musical movements in 1865. Then, in 1877, Thomas Edison changed the history of music box making, when he invented the phonograph, which has important consequences on music box making, especially around the end of the century. In 1886, Albert, the son of Charles Reuge, opened a music box “counter” in Sainte-Croix, which evolved from a basic workshop to a real company that would become the Reuge dynasty. In 1929, Guido,Albert and Henri, from a third generation Reuge, invented the Kandahar ski binding, which helps the company overcome the war and the economic crisis, and helped them build of the Reuge factory, rue des Rasses in Sainte-Croix, which still in use. Then, in 1960, Guido begins to manufacture of large musical pieces, and Reuge becomes world leader in the deluxe musical movements. In 1988, Reuge is taken over by a group of Swiss investors, improving the development and modernizing of the company, and after a difficult period, Reuge repositions the brand in 2004 as a luxury production, containing the original vision of fine Reuge watches and timepieces.
