In the year 1889, the Swiss army was equipped with a novel kind of rifle which required a screwdriver to take it apart. Therefore the need arose to manufacture a device that would manifest all the instruments into one - screwdriver, knife, can opener and reamer! Although this necessity was first met by a Swiss cutler founding a knife company, in the year 1893, the second ranked industrial cutlery of Switzerland was assigned to manufacture knives for the army.
