Arnold Charpie. The timepiece company developed very rapidly because of its 2
important sales points - Calcutta and Bombay. In 1917 the next proprietor, Mr.

During
the world war, the English troops were sent from Bombay to the Persian Gulf. The
soldiers bought West End watches in incredulous numbers! This made the timepiece
brand well known in the Middle East. The
West End watches were so popular in India that they were literally rationed! In
1946, the Indian government began delivering the license of import. The West End
Company came in the premier row with 147000 timepieces and stayed in that
position till its closure in the Indian market in 1975. In between 1977-83, 1.2
millions of chronographs of West End were sold per year making it touch the much
revered position of numero uno Swiss brand in number of pieces. In
1990 the ownership of Aubrey family in West End brand was handed over to a
Chinese group specialized in the electronic calculator, Truly Electronics Ltd.
But again the Aubrey family bought West End after three years. After 117 years of existence, the timepiece company has entered in the European market. It has won the hearts of the Europeans – thanks to its offering of authentic Swiss quality at an affordable rate. |
